Corrugated Box Plant

Problem: This corrugated box plant is typical of many manufacturing facilities with old steam boilers used for both process and space heating. Despite high-energy use and spending over $200,000 per year for space heat, the plant experienced cold drafts and uneven temperatures. The building’s 90,000 cfm exhaust was not offset with enough tempered make-up air creating negative building air pressure. Rising annual maintenance costs for steam trap and condensate lines added to the plant’s space heating expense.
Solution: Cenergy Services designed, installed and commissioned a new heating system that reduced steam load on the boiler by 8,000 pph and saved over $100,000 per year in natural gas usage. Additional savings came from the steam trap and condensate line maintenance expenses that were eliminated for the space heating system. Since the boiler was now only used for process heating applications, it was turned off on weekends reducing wear and energy costs. A follow-up by Cenergy during the second heating season resulted in more improvements that provided the plant additional energy savings of almost $20,000 per year.
